Imagine foi criada ainda com os Beatles, existindo por aí alguns takes de parte dela tocadas nos estúdios de Abbey Road. Ela foi apresentada pela primeira vez apenas em um show beneficente em Nova Iorque, tocada ao violão. Richard Nixon havia colocado o FBI para investigá-lo, pois foi tachado de agitador, subversivo e outros adjetivos. Give peace a chance foi cantada em frente à Casa Branca, por cerca de um muilhão de pessoas, em rejeição à Guerra do Vietnam. A guerra então acabou. Quando todos pediam a ele uma manifestação sobre a sua situação de deportado e o que pensava sobre tudo aquilo, cantou Imagine.

Birthday foi feita inteiramente pelo Paul, quando estiveram na Índia, após a morte do Brian Epstein. Ao retornarem, a proposta de John era que fizessem cada qual um trabalho individual e depois em grupo. Uma experiência a mais, entre a vida de experiências que eram os Beatles.
Em 9 de outubro, Paul apresentou uma nova música, desconhecida de John, para que ele apreciasse, participasse e fizesse então a parte dele. Foi o seu presente de aniversário naquele ano.
Paul, antes de amigo e parceiro, era fã incondicional do John.
