John esteve recluso em um quarto de hospital por 72 horas, quando sua esposa sofreu processo de abortamento. Por essa razão, desapareceu dos estúdios e da vida em geral. Ao retornar, foi severamente criticado pelos amigos, principalmente Paul, por sua falta de responsabilidade, já que estavam trabalhando duro, como sempre costumava acontecer. Para se desculpar e para se justificar da ausência, John apresentou aos demais os rudimentos daquela que viria a ser Don't let me down.

John teve um relacionamento muito conturbado com a mãe, Julia. Separado dela desde a idade da foto, cinco anos, voltou a se reaproximar dela, já um adolescente. Entre muitas outras loucuras por que passou na vida, teve momentos de paixão pela mãe, como mulher, já que ela era muito bonita e atraente. Alguns que querem santificar o John falam que isso é um absurdo, onde já se viu uma coisa dessas e tal. 

Mas eu desafio a quem, do sexo masculino, que nunca teve uma fantasia assim que atire a primeira pedra.
John não é um santo. Ele é "apenas" um gênio genial.
A primeira música que ele aprendeu foi ensinada por ela, tocada num banjo. Era Love me tender, do Elvis.

Ela foi apresentada pela primeira vez apenas em um show beneficente em Nova Iorque, tocada ao violão. Richard Nixon havia colocado o FBI para investigá-lo, pois foi tachado de agitador, subversivo e outros adjetivos. Birthday foi feita inteiramente pelo Paul, quando estiveram na Índia, após a morte do Brian Epstein. Ao retornarem, a proposta de John era que fizessem cada qual um trabalho individual e depois em grupo. Uma experiência a mais, entre a vida de experiências que eram os Beatles.
Em 9 de outubro, Paul apresentou uma nova música, desconhecida de John, para que ele apreciasse, participasse e fizesse então a parte dele. Foi o seu presente de aniversário naquele ano.
Paul, antes de amigo e parceiro, era fã incondicional do John.
